Australia and South Pacific
Australasia is known for its natural beauty whether it is Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, the Sepik Islands of New Guinea or the glaciers and geysers of New Zealand. Australia and New Zealand also have great beaches such as Cable and Whitehaven Beaches, Bondi Beach and the Wakiki Beach, which are always crowded with tourists. Tourists interested in art and culture can visit New Zealand’s Cathedral Square, Art Centre and the Te Papa Museum. Australia has many wildlife sanctuaries such as Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, Phillip Island Nature Reserve and Kakadu National Park where one can catch sight of kangaroos, wallabies, platypuses, koalas, echidnas and kookaburras. Papua New Guinea’s birds and butterflies and unique wildlife in some still unexplored islands of the Indonesian archipelago make this region a fascinating tourist destination.
Note: The term Australasia was coined by Charles de Brosses when he used it in ‘Histoire des navigations aux terres australes’ in 1756. The region is also known as Oceania and is recognized for its unique flora and fauna that indicates a common evolutionary history.
