Festivals
Vienna and Salzburg tend to hog the limelight as far as cultural
festivals are concerned, but many provincial centres also host
festivals of music and theatre that attract top international
performers and enjoy a global reputation. There is also a full
calendar of local religious festivals, many of which have their
roots in rural folk customs that pre-date Christianity.
Annual cultural festivals occupy an important place in
the Austrian calendar. The Salzburger Festspiele (Salzburg
Festival) is perhaps the most renowned - and least accessible - of
a long list of festivals, ranging from classical music to operetta,
from jazz to film. We've listed the most important of these, while
further information on how to obtain tickets is included in the
relevant sections of the text.
