North Píndhos
The region north of the Aóös River is far less visited
than Zagóri. Its landscape is just as scenic but its villages are
very poor relatives - almost all those within sight of the river
were burned by the Germans during early 1944, accounting for their
present thrown-together appearance. The villagers claim that before
this disaster their houses exceeded in splendour those of Zagóri,
since they had ample timber to span huge widths and for carved
interiors.
The region is dominated by mounts Smólikas and
Grámmos , two of the highest peaks in Greece. The former can
be approached on foot from Mount Gamíla or by vehicle from
Kónitsa , the largest settlement in these parts, just off
the Ioánnina-Kastoriá highway.
