Post offices ( correios ) are normally open Mon-Fri 9am-6pm and Saturdays 9am-12pm. To buy stamps , queue at the counter marked selos at the post office, use the dispensing machines available in most post offices, or alternatively go anywhere that has the sign of the red horse on a white circle over a green background. For poste restante services, look for a counter marked encomendas . The Portuguese postal service is reasonably efficient: mail takes about 3 days to Europe and just under a week to the U.S.

International phone calls can be made direct from any telephone booth or post office in the country. Phone cards are available from post offices, kiosks or newsagents and vary in price depending on the latest offer. Cheap-rate international calls are between 8.00pm and 8.00am. The domestic operator number is tel 118; for international assistance - and collect calls - dial 098.

Internet cafés are common in most towns and cities and cost €4-5/hr. Most major post offices also now have Internet booths accessible by buying a card behind the counter.
