Opening hours and holidays

Shops generally open Mon-Sat between 9am-1pm and 3pm-6 or 7pm except for the large shopping centres which are popular in Portugal and stay open until 10pm or midnight. Larger supermarkets tend to stay open until 8pm. Museums, churches and monuments open from around 10am to 6pm; almost all museums and monuments, however, are closed on Mondays, and at Easter, when cultural life seems to cease completely.

The main public holidays are: Jan 1; Feb 12 (Carnival); Good Friday; April 25 (Revolution day); May 1 (Labour day); Corpus Christi; June 10 (Camões day) ; Jun 24 (St John's Day, Lisbon only); Aug 15 (Assumption); Oct 5 (Republic day); Nov 1 (All Saints); Dec 1 (Independence day); Dec 8 (Immaculate Conception day); Dec 25.
