El Tren del Fin del Mundo
El Tren del Fin del Mundo
($25 one way, plus $5 park entrance; tel 02901/431600) is one
of Ushuaia's most publicized attractions, and can be used as a
rather gimmicky means of entering or leaving the national park. It
is the most southern of the world's railways, but offers nothing
like the same experience as Argentina's other tourist railways.
What it lacks is a sense of authenticity - the feeling that you may
not be on anything other than a tourist toy train - and the price
reflects the high investment outlay of the project rather than real
value for money. Still, steam enthusiasts and youngsters will enjoy
the 4.5-kilometre, forty-minute trip, which passes through
woodland, meadows spiked with the stumps of logged trees and
reconstructions of Yámana dwellings by the Río Pipo. Avoid going on
cool, rainy days, as you won't see much, what with the mountains
being in cloud, condensation on the windows, and the steam from the
locomotive. The main station is 8km west of Ushuaia on the road to
the national park (buses leave Ushuaia's Muelle Turístico; 4 daily;
$4 return), and the other is just inside the national park's
boundaries. In high season, there are at least four departures a
day from each.
