South of the Zócalo
The area immediately south of the Zócalo is perhaps the least
rewarding in the centre, but still warrants a brief foray,
particularly if your ultimate destination is the wonderful La
Merced market. Leaving the Zócalo to the south, Pino Suárez
heads off from the corner between the Palacio Nacional and the
Ayuntamiento towards the Museo de la Ciudad. First though, right on
the corner of the square, is the colonial-style modern building
housing the Suprema Corte de Justicia (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; free
but must show ID; Metro Zócalo). Inside are three superb, bitter
murals by Orozco named Proletarian Battles, The National
Wealth and Justice . The last, depicting Justice slumped
asleep on her pedestal while bandits rob the people of their
rights, was not surprisingly unpopular with the judges and powers
that be, and Orozco never completed his commission here.
