Mail and telecommunications
Mail and telecommunication services in Central America run the
gamut from extremely efficient (Belize, Costa Rica and El Salvador)
to chronically temperamental (Guatemala). Postal services are
generally inexpensive, and postcards and letters mailed home do
usually get through, however. Local calls (and many long-distance
internal calls) from payphones are fairly cheap, but international
calls are comparatively more expensive than at home. A number of
private communications agencies operate in the capitals and some
tourist areas, generally offering better service - at a price
